Did you know that batteries are the leading cause of fires in bins, waste collection trucks and waste facilities? Australians are unknowingly causing dozens of fires each year by discarding hazardous waste in kerbside bins and putting truck drivers, communities and the environment in danger. Batteries can now be recycled at any of Council’s supervised waste facilities with special purpose wheelie bins located at both Warwick and Stanthorpe and buckets at all other supervised sites.

Did you know that more than 2,500 mattresses are dumped each year in the Southern Downs? This is a significant burden on the capacity of the region’s landfill. From 31 July, waste facilities will implement a new user pay system for the disposal of mattresses so that they can be sustainably shredded and the metal springs recycled. A $15 fee will apply.

One in five people experience a mental health crisis each year. Early support and intervention play a critical role in helping someone when they are vulnerable. Council is now offering free mental health first aid training to up-skill members of the community to assist people experiencing a mental health issue until professional help is available. The two-day courses also aim to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, improve mental health literacy and spark quality conversations that improve help-seeking behaviour and resilience. For a full list of available dates and more information, visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.

See it, report it, stop it! More than 30 wheelie bins worth of rubbish are illegally dumped each month across the region. Illegal dumping presents serious environmental, health and safety impacts by polluting our region’s pristine environment. It also is a considerable financial and resource burden with ratepayer dollars footing the clean-up bill and staff being diverted from servicing community amenities. Call 1300 697 372 to report an incident.
