Did you know that batteries are the leading cause of fires in bins, waste collection trucks and waste facilities? Australians are unknowingly causing dozens of fires each year by discarding hazardous waste in kerbside bins and putting truck drivers, communities and the environment in danger. Batteries can now be recycled at any of Council’s supervised waste facilities with special purpose wheelie bins located at both Warwick and Stanthorpe and buckets at all other supervised sites.

SDRC 51
Do you want to keep up-to-date on Council news and events in the Southern Downs? It’s so easy when you subscribe to Council’s informative e-newsletters for the latest residential, tourism and business-related news straight to your inbox. Head to sdrc.qld.gov.au/signup to sign up today.

SDRC 52 – ***DECOMMISSIONED 5/12/24***
Did you know that more than 2,500 mattresses are dumped each year in the Southern Downs? This is a significant burden on the capacity of the region’s landfill. From 31 July, waste facilities will implement a new user pay system for the disposal of mattresses so that they can be sustainably shredded and the metal springs recycled. A $15 fee will apply.

SDRC 53 – ***DECOMMISSIONED 5/12/24***
Council plays a key role in the sustainable disposal of fridges, freezers and air-conditioners to meet environmental obligations. From 31 July, waste facilities will implement a new user pay system for the disposal of fridges, freezers and air-conditioners to ensure these items are appropriately degassed to prevent harmful gases damaging the ozone layer. A $12 fee will apply.

SDRC 56 – ****Off air from 30 May 2024****
One in five people experience a mental health crisis each year. Early support and intervention play a critical role in helping someone when they are vulnerable. Council is now offering free mental health first aid training to up-skill members of the community to assist people experiencing a mental health issue until professional help is available. The two-day courses also aim to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, improve mental health literacy and spark quality conversations that improve help-seeking behaviour and resilience. For a full list of available dates and more information, visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.

SDRC 58
Attention non-for-profit community and sporting groups! If you’ve got an idea for a project that will benefit the wider community, let us help you bring it to life. Council has grants of up to $2k to kick-start your community project. Last year we helped 27 projects through this initiative. To apply or find out more, visit ww.sdrc.qld.gov.au.

SDRC 64
Have you swapped your old showerhead or sprinkler for a new FREE efficient one yet? Residents can still exchange their old SHOWERHEADS or SPRINKLERS for new, water saving ones to help conserve water and save on energy costs. Download and complete the form from Council’s website and take your old showerhead or sprinkler to either our Stanthorpe, Warwick or Allora Customer Service Centre.

66
Get ready Southern Downs! Council’s Disaster Dashboard contains a lot of very important information that assists our community during times of natural disaster. Have you bookmarked it yet? You can find the SDRC Disaster Dashboard at disaster.sdrc.qld.gov.au.

67
Council’s official MySDRC App has now has smoother interface navigation and wider software compatibility to make it easier to stay informed of important Council news and alerts. If you already have the app on your phone, it will automatically update. The app is available for download from Apple and Google stores.

68
The Warwick Saleyards Redevelopment Project is well underway. The $7.5m project will deliver strategic enhancements to secure a sustainable future for the saleyards and support the region’s biggest industry. Visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au for all the latest information. The project is co-funded by the Federal Government through the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant Program and Council.

69
See it, report it, stop it! More than 30 wheelie bins worth of rubbish are illegally dumped each month across the region. Illegal dumping presents serious environmental, health and safety impacts by polluting our region’s pristine environment. It also is a considerable financial and resource burden with ratepayer dollars footing the clean-up bill and staff being diverted from servicing community amenities. Call 1300 697 372 to report an incident.
